Kickstart Your Day with a Purple Berry Smoothie
Purple is my favorite color, so to pay homage to this hue, I’m sharing a delicious blueberry-flavored smoothie that’ll bring a smile to your morning. Over the past year, I’ve been experimenting with smoothie recipes and developing my go-to collection.
I’ve been obsessed with the color of my smoothies that range from red, green, pale orange, yellow and purple. I find extra pleasure sipping on pretty-colored healthy breakfast drinks, so I continue trying out new ingredients. As they say, variety is the spice of life; it’s so true with smoothies! See my Smoothie 101 post with loads of info and tips on making healthy, delish smoothies.
Health Benefits of Purple Power
I share my purple smoothie that I’ve been testing out for a few weeks. The gorgeous color is as good as it looks with mild red cabbage (my secret ingredient!) as the vegetable base. The cabbage is shockingly undetectable especially using fruit that that naturally sweetens the mixture.
Red cabbage is a good source of potassium, antioxidants and other nutrients that help maintain bone and brain health. Low in calories and high in fiber, it helps you feel full longer too, which is a good thing with smoothies. Mixing in vitamin-rich blueberries further increases the amount of antioxidants which help reduce inflammation.
Making Smoothies a Habit
On my quest to be healthier, smoothies became part of my lifestyle with a Ninja blender/food processor that I use nearly every day. I started out strong with my first recipe using kale and then took off trying an assortment of vegetables and fruits to create colorful, nourishing and flavorful blends. Here are my favorite ones so far:
- My blueberry, banana and kale recipe got me hooked on smoothies from the get-go.
- My refreshing and scrumptious green smoothie tastes like a summer day with a little fresh mint and avocado.
- The flavors of my pumpkin spice smoothie are so satisfying and remind me of the Dunkin’ pumpkin muffin … only with half the calories!!!
- Luscious with bright flavors, my red smoothie includes beets with either mango and cherries or a fresh whole orange.
