Kickstart Your Day with a Purple Berry Smoothie

Purple is my favorite color, so to pay homage to this hue, I’m sharing a delicious blueberry-flavored smoothie that’ll bring a smile to your morning. Over the past year, I’ve been experimenting with smoothie recipes and developing my go-to collection.

I’ve been obsessed with the color of my smoothies that range from red, green, pale orange, yellow and purple. I find extra pleasure sipping on pretty-colored healthy breakfast drinks, so I continue trying out new ingredients. As they say, variety is the spice of life; it’s so true with smoothies! Health Benefits of Purple Power

I share my purple smoothie that I’ve been testing out for a few weeks. The gorgeous color is as good as it looks with mild red cabbage (my secret ingredient!) as the vegetable base. The cabbage is shockingly undetectable especially using fruit that that naturally sweetens the mixture.

Red cabbage is a good source of potassium, antioxidants and other nutrients that help maintain bone and brain health. Low in calories and high in fiber, it helps you feel full longer too, which is a good thing with smoothies. Mixing in vitamin-rich blueberries further increases the amount of antioxidants which help reduce inflammation.

Making Smoothies a Habit

On my quest to be healthier, smoothies became part of my lifestyle with a Ninja blender/food processor that I use nearly every day. I started out strong with my first recipe using kale and then took off trying an assortment of vegetables and fruits to create colorful, nourishing and flavorful blends. Here are my favorite ones so far:

Purple Smoothie (Berries and Red Cabbage)

Wake up to a beautifully vibrant purple smoothie that’s packed with nutrients to kickstart your day. If you prefer a smoothie that’s naturally on the sweeter side, this one’s for you. You won’t even taste the red cabbage with the berries and banana, and it’ll that will keep you full all morning.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped red cabbage
  • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
  • 6 frozen cherries
  • 2 tablespoons ground flax
  • 2/3 cups skim or nondairy milk (I use cashew)
  • 2 teaspoons almond or cashew butter
  • 4 ice cubes

Instructions

  • Put all ingredients in a high-powered blender and process it on high speed.

  • If it’s too thick, add in additional milk or water.
  • If too thin, add in more ice cubes and blend.

    1. When I started making smoothies, I was all about the leafy greens; not now I try all sorts of vegetables but still love my greens.
